Παιδεια

Paideia is an ancient Greek concept, and probably the key to understanding what made ancient Greece so extraordinarily great that its example has transcended its own time to become timeless, universal and indeed classic.

The meaning of paideia can best be understood as the formation of character, the kind of character that is the distinguishing mark of the productive, the efficient, the brave, the leaders, the conquerors, the victors and last but not least: the happy, those that live the good life in true self-contentment.

Today's world is a globalized world; competition, networking and collaboration is all global. The top performers in this world are those that are most attentive to the fact that there is more to a company than its products, premises and tools. This fourth factor is people, in particular people's talents, skills and character. Augusta Academy is dedicated to the development of the last of these three elements; character.

PProducts, premises and tools are essential to an organization's flourishing, but so are the people that produce, present, sell, deliver after-sales service, build relations, and run the company. All these functions require specific skill sets, but they also have something else in common; the quality of the performance of all these functions is directly related to the quality of the character of the people performing them - so if the character of the people were to be improved, then so would their performance on the job be, just as would be also their performance outside work.

The word character comes from ancient Greek signifying to engrave or furrow a distinctive mark. More specifically that which marks one as a social being, meaning socially desirable qualities and virtues such as social consciousness, self-control, loyalty, fortitude and depth of commitment to respect-worthy and meritorious conduct. A more neutral and modern definition would be that character consists in the combination of mental and behavioral characteristics that distinguishes a person or group.

In a sense, the mark of a character is like that of a tattoo; it is not so difficult to make the first draft or to expand one already well made, although it does hurt a little - but to significantly alter a tattoo or a character; that does hurt considerably.

Significantly altering a character certainly is possible over time by way of paideia or psychological therapy. While the duration of a presentation or a short course will not be sufficient for turning bad people into good, it is nonetheless very well suited to inspire and motivate good people to become better and bad people to becoming less bad by providing them with the crucial insights and tools to embark upon the journey of turning their potential into reality.

The most successful companies of today are those that prioritize and invest the most in the development of the human potential of their employees. This truth is not only backed up by contemporary facts but also confirmed by 2.500 years of human history and critical thinking: the greater the development of human potential, the higher the performance, and the greater the rewards.

All the most successful companies, countries and civilizations today and throughout all the known history have at least this one thing in common: they take human potential serious and they invest a considerable portion of their resources to develop it and bring it to its fruition, because they know it pays off manyfold.

Your individual character is not only contagious, it also constitutes an equal part in the total sum that is the character of your organization and all other collectives that you are a member of. This sum of character is the mean of all the characters that constitute that specific organization or collective.

Developing your character will then help both you and the organization you represent, first and foremost to get more out of yourself but also of those you interact with. As a consequence you will also thereby be getting more out of life itself.
